BACK WHERE WE WANT TO BE: RICHMOND PROMOTED TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP

BACK WHERE WE WANT TO BE: RICHMOND PROMOTED TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP

20 games won. Over 800 points scored. Richmond are champions!

Richmond Rugby have secured promotion to the Championship with two games to spare, capping off a dominant season by being crowned National One champions.

It’s the result of a campaign built on consistency, resilience, and outstanding squad depth – a season where Richmond set the tone early and never looked back. The team went unbeaten in their first 13 games and have lost just twice in 24 matches so far, scoring over 800 points and conceding fewer than 20 per game on average.

A 49–22 home win over title rivals Rams on Friday proved to be the decisive result. The following day, Rotherham Titans’ loss to Blackheath confirmed the result we were all hoping for and making it mathematically impossible for any team to catch us.

The squad has blended experience with youth, power with flair – and importantly, developed a style of rugby that is as effective as it is entertaining. Under Head Coach Rob Powell, Richmond have played with freedom and ambition, backed by a tight-knit squad that’s bought into a clear identity.

"I would like to thank all the players and staff for their contributions in making this happen. Everyone has played their part and bought into what we are trying to achieve. National One is tough and attritional,” said Powell. “The resilience and teamwork shown all season has been admirable and summarises what this club is about. We are lucky to have such passionate supporters, members and board who have cheered the squad on to this success"

Captain Alex Schwarz, who stepped into the role mid-season, praised the depth and culture of the group:

“The success we’ve had is a reflection of the entire squad – including those who haven’t featured on matchdays but have shown up every week to drive standards. That’s what this club is all about.”

Club President James Foster echoed those sentiments, hailing the club’s approach both on and off the field.

“Winning National One and returning to the Championship is a huge achievement,” said Foster. “Credit to Rob Powell, our coaches, and every player. We’ve done it the Richmond way – sustainably and with integrity. And with our Women also in the Championship playoffs, it’s been a fantastic season across the club.”

With two fixtures still to play, including a final home game against Blackheath on 26th April, celebrations are only just beginning. But the hard work is already done.
