On Saturday 16th May, we take on local rivals and our tenants, London Scottish, at the Richmond Athletic Ground, with everything on the line.

The two sides first met this season in what can only be described as an intense, blockbuster New Year’s clash, with Scottish edging a 26–27 victory on our home turf.

Seven tries. Four yellow cards. An electric atmosphere in the grandstand. It was a game that had everything, and one that underlined just how little separates the two sides.

In the return fixture earlier this month, Richmond avenged the loss with a terrific comeback victory to defeat a strong London Scottish side 17-24. It was a wholehearted, and fully committed performance that gave us 5 points, twelfth place and home advantage in the next Scottish derby match on 16th May.

Looking at the history between the clubs, this rivalry couldn’t be much tighter. Across the last 30 meetings, just six points separate the sides overall, with us scoring 515 to Scottish’s 509. Both teams averaging exactly 18 points per game.

In a fixture like this, form often goes out the window. Every player knows what this game means. A real chance to get one over on local rivals, with far more than pride at stake.

While neither side set out to be in this position at the start of the season, there was always a sense that it could come down to a playoff between the two.

As a newly promoted side, we’ve adapted well to life in the Champ, consistently competing against top opposition. That was evident in our last two home games against 4th -place Worcester Warriors and 2nd-place Bedford Blues. Despite falling short on the scoreboard, we put 62 points on two of the league’s strongest sides, highlighting the attacking threat we carry on any given day.

The reality of the league is that we continue to compete with a part-time squad, training twice a week, against fully professional outfits. But that hasn’t stopped this group from stepping up throughout the season.

In contrast, London Scottish have found results harder to come by against the top teams, but they arrive with confidence at the Richmond Athletic Ground. Their last four victories this season have all come here.

The Playoff picture:
The winner on May 16 secures their place in the Champ next season. The loser will face the winner of National League 1’s promotion playoff game, Blackheath vs Plymouth Albion (May 9), in a final playoff to decide the remaining spot.

Player to Watch: Paul Altier | Winger
Altier has been one of the standout performers since returning from a long-term hip injury in early April.

Introduced against Worcester Warriors, he made an immediate impact with a hat-trick in front of a packed home crowd.

Prior to his injury, last summer the electric winger had also featured on the international stage, helping Hong Kong China secure qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, their first-ever appearance on rugby’s biggest stage.

He’s added real energy to our backline and will be one to watch heading into this fixture.

The stage is set for what promises to be a huge contest.

Local rivals. Familiar surroundings. A titanic battle is certain.

Make sure you’re there to support us!
