It’s been a season to remember at Richmond Rugby club.
Our women had the perfect ending with both the 1st team and Valkyries (2nd team) winning their respective finals on a fantastic day at Twickenham. It was a fitting end to the season with the 1st team winning against Old Albanians, who had beaten them in the final of the Championship last year. The Valkyries overcame Sandal in by far their most competitive match of the season. Having won their league, this was the Junior Cup Final win to cap a thrilling day for all the Richmond players, supporters, and staff. Much credit goes to Ross and all his team for having grown the section so much over the last 2 seasons. The Valkyries were reintroduced only two seasons ago, and now the section has over 40 players regularly training. This is underpinned by a growing girls' section where we have more players who have played more games this season. The success at the top of the section is undoubtedly providing inspiration to the girls who will represent the future of the club.
The Men's section has provided equal drama, albeit of a different nature. In the first season back in the Champ, the 1st team competed admirably and were competitive throughout the season. The goal of staying in the league was realised in the most nail-biting fashion in a play-off against our old rival, London Scottish. This is no mean feat given the limitations on playing budget and the demands of what is a very attritional and highly competitive league. The Vikings (2nd team) won the Gaucho ROC London Shield. The Saxons (our third team) also made the playoffs, and after a fantastic semi-final win at Blackheath, the two Richmond teams met in the Final in a highly entertaining game under the lights on Pitch 1 at the RAG. The Vikings ultimately came out on top, but the Saxons' achievement should not be underestimated. Competing as a third team in a second-team league, they have more than held their own and enjoyed an impressive season.
Elsewhere around the club, the mini section continues to thrive with growing numbers at the youngest ages, which is where players and parents start their journey at Richmond. The boys' youth section has also had a strong year, and playing numbers and matches played have been stable against last season.
Walking rugby and social touch continue to thrive as we demonstrate that RFC really is a club for all and a club for life.
I would like to thank all our players, members, volunteers, and staff who have made this such a memorable year. It would not be possible without all the hard work by everyone. Richmond really is a special club, and it is made as such by the people who populate it throughout the rugby season.
We very much look forward to the next season and look forward to welcoming everyone back as we create more special memories together.
