Round 22 brings another big test to the Richmond Athletic Ground this Saturday, with a 3pm kick-off as Richmond host high-flying Worcester Warriors in a clash with plenty on the line at both ends of the table.
The stakes could hardly be higher. Worcester arrive pushing for top spot as the season approaches its final stages, while Richmond are locked in a battle for survival, fighting to stay clear of the playoff places in the run-in. It sets the scene for a contest where both sides have everything to play for.
There’s also a sense of history to Saturday’s fixture. Two former Premiership sides – Richmond in the 1990s and Worcester more recently in the 2010s – now meet in the Champ. Worcester’s squad, packed with players who have operated at the highest level, will be determined to drive their push for top spot, but Richmond will be equally motivated to defend their place and prove their quality on home soil.
Worcester’s strength this season has been built on their attacking threat and breakdown efficiency. They lead the league for defenders beaten (581) and have scored the second-most tries (118), underlining their ability to turn pressure into points.
Richmond, however, will take real confidence from key areas of their own performance. The set-piece delivered a perfect platform last time out, with 100% scrum success and flawless goal kicking. Around the field, work-rate and commitment remain standout, with Xavier Hastings continuing to lead the defensive effort, while Luke Spring’s consistency at the breakdown has been a hallmark of Richmond’s season.
Saturday also marks two important milestones for the home side. Luke Spring is set to make his 100th appearance for the club, a testament to his consistency and influence throughout the campaign, while Chidera Obonna reaches his 50th cap – both players central figures in Richmond’s efforts this season.
Saturday’s contest is likely to be shaped by the battle at the breakdown and the control of territory. Worcester’s ability to generate quick ball and attack space will test Richmond’s organisation, but Richmond’s discipline, kicking game and set-piece accuracy give them the tools to dictate the tempo and build pressure.
With top spot on the line for Worcester and Richmond fighting to secure their place, this is a fixture charged with intensity and purpose. Backed by the RAG crowd, Richmond have a real opportunity to rise to the occasion, disrupt one of the league’s strongest sides, and take a crucial step in their run-in.
