Richmond Rugby is proud to acknowledge the appointment of our Club Secretary and Board Director, Deborah Griffin OBE, as the new President of the Rugby Football Union, the first woman to hold the position in its 143-year history.

Deborah’s appointment comes at a significant moment for the game, with England set to host the Women’s Rugby World Cup later this summer. It also reflects her longstanding contribution to the sport. A central figure in the development of women’s rugby, Deborah was one of the four founders of the inaugural Women’s Rugby World Cup in 1991 and has since played a leading role in the governance of the game at both national and international level.

Deborah said "I’m excited to be taking up the role of President but, as the first female, I have some trepidation because there is bound to be a lot of scrutiny. I want to be myself and bring a female perspective but also honour the presidential role and represent the RFU, encompassing all our clubs, players and volunteers.”

At Richmond, she continues to be an active and valued member of the club. As Club Secretary and Director, Deborah contributes to the strategic direction of Richmond Rugby and is closely involved in supporting and growing the women’s section of the club.

We are pleased to see someone who has given so much to the sport, and Richmond, take on this role, and we look forward to following her presidency over the year ahead.
