Richmond Women Complete Historic Double at Allianz Stadium

Richmond Women Complete Historic Double at Allianz Stadium

Freya Portway27 May - 10:27

Richmond Women battle the heat to bring home double silverware.

The Richmond women’s section stormed onto the hallowed turf of the Allianz Stadium on Sunday for a thrilling day of finals rugby, played out under a relentless 32-degree heatwave. With temperatures soaring throughout the afternoon, scheduled water breaks were introduced across both fixtures – but even the blistering conditions could not slow Richmond’s charge to silverware.

The day began bright and early as the Valkyries kicked things off against Sandal Women at 11am for the Junior Cup Final. Heading into the final after a dominant league and cup campaign, expectations were high and the squad delivered once again. While the scoreline proved to be their closest contest of the season, it only added to the drama and intensity of the occasion. Richmond edged into half-time with a narrow 17-12 lead before pulling away in the second half to secure a hard-fought 27-19 victory in front of an energetic crowd.

After a two-hour break, attention turned to the 1st XV, who took centre stage at 3pm against fierce rivals Old Albanian Saints in the Championship Playoff Final. Having already beaten Saints twice in the league this season – and facing the very side they met in last year’s final – the stage was perfectly set for another classic encounter.

What followed was a rollercoaster of emotions for players and spectators alike. Richmond went into the break trailing 24-19 before Saints extended their lead to 12 points early in the second half, leaving Richmond with it all to do. But the Richmond women refused to let the occasion slip away. Showing immense character and composure in the sweltering heat, they clawed their way back into the game to complete a stunning turnaround and seal a dramatic 38-31 victory.

It marked a memorable day for the club as both Richmond sides lifted silverware at Allianz Stadium, with the trophies presented by club legend and RFU President Deborah Griffin. Smiles, celebrations and happy tears followed the final whistle, along with a collective sigh of relief after a long and demanding season.

The women will now enjoy a well-earned month off before returning for pre-season on 7th July at Old Deer Park, as preparations begin for another exciting campaign ahead.
