OURFC vs Richmond FC
We are proud to be hosting the 4th Ian Williams Memorial Match on Saturday 27th September at Richmond Athletic Ground, as Oxford University (OURFC) take on a Richmond Rugby XV on Pitch 3, just outside the Murray Judd Bar.
This year’s fixture holds special significance, marking 50 years since Ian’s father, Philip Williams (known to many as “Tonka”), made his first official appearance for Richmond Rugby. Phil went on to dedicate his entire playing career to the club, turning out for all four senior men’s sides and playing every position in the pack.
About Ian Williams
Ian Williams was a talented tighthead prop and a beloved figure both on and off the field. Born in Chichester, Ian attended Sherborne School and played mini rugby at Havant RFC and youth rugby at London Welsh before joining the Richmond U21s. He went on to represent Richmond’s 1st XV and the Heavies, touring with the club while studying at Swansea University, where he played in three Welsh Varsity matches, before winning three more Varsity caps for University of Oxford. Having Richmond and OURFC take the field in his memory this year feels especially fitting.
Ian tragically passed away in February 2018 at the age of 27, after collapsing during training with Doncaster Knights. He is the much-loved son of Phil “Tonka” Williams and Pippa, and younger brother to Helen.
The Williams family have been part of Richmond’s fabric for over half a century, and this match stands as a celebration of Ian’s life.
