Toby Saysell Announces Retirement from Rugby

Josh Carpenter18 Jun - 10:30

After over nine seasons of dedicated service, Richmond flanker Toby Saysell has announced his retirement from rugby.

A true club man, Toby’s journey through Richmond is a rare one, rising from the Normans all the way through to the 1st XV, marking a century of appearances earlier this season in a memorable clash against Plymouth Albion.

Known for his relentless work rate, commitment at the breakdown, and strong leadership, Toby has been a constant presence within the squad across nearly a decade of rugby. His influence extended beyond match-days; he was a key part of the leadership group and a player who embodied the values and spirit of Richmond Rugby both on and off the pitch.

Saysell’s first season alone was a reflection of the player he would become. Starting in the Normans, his performances quickly earned him promotion through the club’s 4 Senior Men’s sides, culminating in a 1st XV appearance by the end of the campaign, a rare feat that set the tone for the years that followed.

He leaves the club with 100 Men’s 1st XV appearances, countless tours, and the love of his teammates, coaches and supporters alike.

“Over the past 10 years, Richmond has become family to me. It’s been a difficult decision, but the right one to make. I’ll miss every Saturday playing down at the RAG, but I’m really looking forward to having a beer with everyone as a supporter myself.

They are a special group of boys. Coming down to training after a long day at work, and getting to spend time with them is something I’ll definitely miss. I’d like to say a massive thanks to the fans, players and staff for supporting me throughout my time at the club.”

Head of Rugby Rob Powell praised Toby’s character and lasting contribution to the club:
“Toby has been an outstanding servant to Richmond Rugby. He’s the type of player who displays the values that we are trying to harness throughout the club. He is hard-working, dedicated and selfless both in his performances and his attitude.

From the moment he came through the ranks, he set standards on and off the field. He’s earned the respect of every player and coach he’s worked with, and leaves a legacy for others to follow. We’ll miss having him out there, but he can be proud of everything he’s given to the club.”

Richmond Rugby would like to thank Toby for his incredible commitment, leadership and service to the club. We look forward to welcoming him back to the RAG as part of the Richmond family for many years to come.
