Vikings Lay Down the Marker Under the Lights

Freya Portway5 Feb - 12:46

A dominant midweek display sets the tone ahead of Friday night at the RAG.

Richmond Vikings set the precedent for the weekend with a dominant Wednesday Night Lights display away at Rams, running out 12-40 winners against a side featuring nine National One players.

The Vikings were relentless from the outset, imposing themselves physically and dictating the tempo to surge into a commanding 33-7 lead at the break. Despite Rams naming a 26-man squad to Richmond’s 24, the visitors showed cohesion, composure, and control throughout.

Several Saxons stepped up to the occasion and made their mark on the night. Debutant Rio Poleon-Henry caught the eye with a blistering 40-metre sprint, showcasing real confidence and pace at this level. The fixture also saw key returns, with George Nugent back on the field and getting valuable minutes. “It was good to play with a great bunch of lads and to get some minutes in the legs,” he said post-match. Tom Howlett has also made his return from injury, as well as Greg Kitson who impressed with a strong all-round performance.

The result was a convincing statement at Old Bath Road. Momentum is building as attention now turns to Friday night, when the 1st XV host Nottingham at the Richmond Athletic Ground.
