World Cup Bound: Richmond Duo Inspire Hong Kong China Rugby to Historic Qualification

Richmond Rugby are proud to celebrate the remarkable success of Alex Post and Paul Altier.

Richmond Rugby are proud to celebrate the remarkable success of Alex Post and Paul Altier, who played starring roles in Hong Kong China Rugby’s commanding 70–22 victory over Korea on Saturday, 5th July in Incheon, a result that secured their qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, the country’s first-ever appearance on rugby’s biggest stage.

Both players started in the final and rose to the occasion in emphatic style. Post, a powerful and consistent presence at hooker, crossed the whitewash twice in the win, while Altier, operating on the wing, added a superb try, set up by Post as Hong Kong China Rugby ran riot in the second half.

Their contributions in the tournament were exceptional across the board: both Post and Altier scored three tries apiece, with Altier also finishing as the top points scorer across the Asia Rugby Championship, underlining his threat with ball in hand and accuracy from the tee.

The final was a momentous occasion for Alex Post, who not only delivered a standout performance, but continues to be a central figure in Hong Kong China Rugby’s rise. With 60 caps for Richmond and now the second most-capped player in the Hong Kong squad, Post has long been a figure of consistency and commitment at both club and international level.

Reflecting on the achievement, Post said:

“It’s something I’ve worked towards for a long time. I’m only 29, but I don’t feel like a spring chicken - I don’t know how many other opportunities I’d get, and playing in the Rugby World Cup has always been a dream. It’s the pinnacle of the sport, and I don’t know many people who wouldn’t want to play at the very top like that.”

“For us to reach the pinnacle of the sport can only mean good things for the exposure and the growth of the game in Hong Kong.”

Meanwhile, the tournament also gave Richmond supporters a thrilling first glimpse of Paul Altier, the club’s new summer signing from French side Stade Olympique Chambérien. A versatile utility back with flair and composure, Altier's ability to beat defenders, find space, and convert chances saw him play a key attacking role throughout the campaign, a hugely exciting prospect for the 2025/26 season at the Richmond Athletic Ground.

Saturday’s result marks a defining moment in Hong Kong China Rugby’s history, and Richmond Rugby are honoured to have two of our own players at the heart of it.

The club congratulates Alex and Paul on their incredible achievements and will be proudly supporting them as they prepare to represent Hong Kong China Rugby on the global stage at the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
