Richmond Men’s 1st XV step onto the pitch for the first time this Saturday as they open their pre-season with a clash of rugby’s oldest rivalry against Blackheath. It’s the first of three warm-up fixtures for the 1st XV, and both the 1st XV and Vikings will be in action at the Utilita, setting the stage for a full afternoon of rugby.
We faced Blackheath twice last season in two very physical appearances. With the last meeting taking place back at the RAG in April in a memorable day when we lifted the National League 1 trophy.
New Faces in Richmond Colours
This weekend offers supporters a first look at seven fresh additions to the squad. Former Bedford Blues flanker Luke Frost and Irishman Donnacha Byrne both start in the back row, bringing power and dynamism to the pack.
At fly-half, we welcome Jason Baggott. With a wealth of experience and composure in the No. 10 jersey, he’ll be a key figure in orchestrating the attack.
On the bench, fans will see further new arrivals: versatile forward Alex Ashton, Cambridge’s Jared Cardew, Rotherham Titan Ronnie du Randt, and Newcastle University’s Archie Brosch are all set to make their first Richmond appearances.
A First Test
With six weeks until the league kicks off, this match is the perfect chance to test combinations, build cohesion, and give game time to the squad. Blackheath always bring intensity and physicality, so Richmond can expect a stern first examination of their pre-season preparations.
Double Header at the Utilita
It’s not just the 1st XV on display. The Richmond Vikings will also be in action against Blackheath Club XV, making it a true club occasion to launch the season.
