Rugby returns to the Richmond Athletic Ground on Saturday 22 August as Richmond Men’s First XV welcome Swansea for their opening pre-season fixture of 2026/27.
After a demanding summer, the 2pm kick-off will provide Richmond’s players with their first opportunity to test themselves in match conditions and begin building towards the new Champ season.
It will also be the first chance for supporters to see how the new-look squad is taking shape. Richmond have welcomed 13 new signings this summer, while several players returning from injury could also earn valuable minutes as competition for places begins.
Swansea will provide a strong and historic opening test. Founded in 1872, the All Whites are one of the most famous names in Welsh club rugby. In 1935, they became the first club side to defeat all three of the southern hemisphere’s major touring nations, completing the set with an 11–3 victory over New Zealand after earlier wins against Australia in 1908 and South Africa in 1912.
Today, Swansea compete in Super Rygbi Cymru, the top tier of domestic club rugby in Wales. They finished in mid-table last season, winning nine of their 18 league matches and scoring 68 tries along the way.
Although no league points are at stake, the afternoon will offer an early indication of the combinations taking shape and the progress made during pre-season. For the players, it is an opportunity to get back onto the pitch. For supporters, it is the first chance to meet the new group and see the beginnings of the side that will represent Richmond this season.
The fixture is also included with every 2026/27 Richmond membership. Members can attend free but must show a valid membership card at the gate.
General admission is £10, and under-16s attend free. The bar will be open from midday ahead of the 2pm kick-off.
