Match Preview

Freya Portway26 Feb - 12:35

This Friday night marks the end of block 3 of Richmond’s first season back in the Champ with a demanding trip to Hartpury RFC, currently fifth in the league. Last time these two sides met it was a hard-fought 17–12 win over Hartpury at the Richmond Athletic Ground, racing into a 17-0 lead through clinical finishing and disciplined defence before withstanding a late fightback. It was a contest defined by Richmond’s physicality at set-piece and composure under sustained pressure.

Continuity remains a theme as Richmond retain the core of last week’s group The only adjustment sees Xavier Hastings step into the starting XV, while Freddie Hosking returns to Richmond colours after four years away.

Richmond travel with momentum after last week’s win over Cambridge and the confidence of having beaten Hartpury earlier in the season. In contrast, Hartpury arrive on the back of two successive defeats and will be intent on responding on home soil.

Set-piece confrontation
Hartpury possess one of the most disruptive lineouts in the league. They lead the Champ with 38 steals and have drawn 23 maul penalties this season. Their contest in the air and ability to fracture opposition maul structure will be central to their approach.

Richmond’s counterpoint is efficiency. A 100 percent scrum success rate in Round 18 underlines technical precision and front-row cohesion. In the same round, eight mauls were secured, joint best in the league, reinforcing control in structured possession.

Territorial strategy
Hartpury lead the league for kicks in play with 567, accumulating 16,316 kick metres. Territory is a primary lever in their game model. Expect a pronounced aerial exchange, driven by chase-line cohesion and backfield decision-making under pressure.

Friday night will likely be decided by marginal gains at set-piece, clarity in the kicking duel, and breakdown accuracy under fatigue. It's set to be a huge 80 minutes under the lights.
