The Heavies are the veteran team of Richmond Rugby and were formed back in 1971. The Heavies teamsheets traditionally include former internationals alongside others who have played top class rugby but are now over 35. The Heavies are always looking to refresh the squad with new, younger, faces who want to play fun, high level, social rugby.

The Heavies recently established a new part of the Richmond Rugby family which was borne out of the premature deaths of three players, closely connected to the Heavies, within six weeks of each other in 2018 - The Richmond Heavies Foundation. Click here for more information.

In the Heavies, tradition dictates that a new Captain is elected every year by former skippers, and that if you’re spotted out training, a jug of gin and tonic will be your fine at the next game.

The Heavies are famed for long haul tours to destinations like the Caribbean, South Africa, USA and Argentina. You could earn also a famous ‘Stripy Heavies Blazer’ for touring with us.

Whilst we have had numerous internationals play in the shirt over the years, we have also had some fully unbeaten seasons; Botes ’73, Chisnall ’84, O’Hanlon ’87, Slagter ’90, Oliveira ’95, Chisnall ’01, Hawkes ’03 and Cuthbert '20. It’s certainly a feat every Captain aims for, not least to keep Dougal quiet.
